How Fashion Reflexes Our Life and Living

A trend simply reflects what seems to be happening at any given time. A trend can be in any area and not just reflects fashion, pop culture, and entertainment. There may also be a tendency in the stock market to be bullish or bearish, depending on economic indicators, or a political trend that reflects the current state of mind of a nation. Some trends are fun, some fabulous, some terrible, but for long lasting, you can be sure that there will always be a new trend that comes to replace the old.

Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behavior and the newest creations of textile designers.

After all, everyone has a different idea of what is elegant, no matter what trend is in stores or in the media. Fashion means so many different things to different people. Even a person can approach differently depending on what the occasion is or how they feel from day to day.

Here are 3 different things that fashion means to me:

AESTHETIC.

I wear the suits I wear because I like the way they look. Do I need to say more? We are inspired by the style of the movies and TV shows we see, the bands we listen to, the celebrities we follow and, naturally, our friends. An aesthetic is both a look and a membership pass in a certain tribe and subculture style.

 MAGAZINE

We are all narrators, whether we think of ourselves that way or not. That’s why some songs can have special meanings or remind us of someone else, and why other songs can annoy the devils outside of us. (Remind yourself: do not set the songs you like as your alarm or listen to them while you study). Like the music we hear, the clothes we wear can capture memories and feelings. When I look at my black culottes and my crop top, I think of the days after my exams, sunbathing with my friends in the park, a book in one hand and a slice of pizza in the other. When I look at my tartan handkerchief, I laugh at how my friends and I unpacked gravely in Scotland and had to pull handkerchiefs out of desperation to protect us from rain and the wind.

That’s why, while shopping online and at the fashion outlets that dot the malls on Orchard Road, I also love to shop at thrift or secondhand stores. When I pick something up, I do not know what its past is, but it’s nice to think about how it has had another life before it came to my hands, especially pieces that seem to come from another era.

A STATEMENT.

Fashion is also a way to make a statement. I do not mean simply using statement pieces, like a thick collar or a printed skirt. (That’s another story for another day.)Sometimes they are statements of self-expression. Sharper eyeliner and leather jacket for fierce days. Soft, fluffy shirts and dresses for worry-free days.

At other times, these are statements of what I believe and support. I think the Earth we live in is worth saving, so I’m doing my best to do my part in supporting sustainable fashion. If I could, I would buy from brands that have sustainable practices, where my heart says yes my bank account says no. (Honestly, my wallet feels the burn even when I buy the cheapest fashion brands). Alternatively, I bought second hand whenever I can.
